Safety is Better than cure !
#1 Only Install From official app Store.

Avoid installing apps using APK files provided on many spam site, always try to install apps from official app store. I would recommend always use Google Play Store to download Android apps, though Amazon appstore also allows you to download android apps.

#2 Check “Install from unknown sources”
By default every android phone have this option checked. This prevents the installation of apps other than via play store.
To check this option, Go to setting menu > Application > Unknown source.
Always keep this option checked.
#3 Use Virus Scanner apps
There are lots of virus scanner apps available on Google play store you can use any of them to scan your device for virus. If you device is affected by virus or any malwares, you will get notified and you can clean it up. Though all the virus scanner are not accurate, there may be chances of the false positive result, hence its better to use above two methods , to prevent virus.
